National Highways Work Experience Week 2023

National Highways Work Experience Week 2023

To begin your journey for the National Highways Work Experience Week 2023 please watch the video and answer the short questions.

Information about the week:

This week’s placement is to plan, cost, and design part of a new road in England.

Over the week you will meet a variety of people who work in construction and engineering, learning about their jobs and their route into construction. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds and their paths into their current job have not always been what you might expect. You will also meet recruitment experts to give you hints and tips on CVs and interviews.

With the help from their presentations, using your own skills and those of your team members, you will work to create a presentation which shows why our judges should pick your company and its designs to build part of the new road.

Mentors

A mentor on the National Highways Work Experience is one of the most important positions of the week. They are asked to give up 2 hours of their afternoon between 1 and 3, Monday to Wednesday, 10 till 12 on a Thursday and 20minutes on a Thursday afternoon, to spend time working with a small group of students on their work experience presentation challenge. The role of the mentor is to help the young people understand their task, guide them in the right direction and encourage communication and good ideas.

Mentors can be virtual, or host in person on-site, in offices or depots. In-person mentors/hosts are expected to provide space for up to 6 students to work together through the week and internet connections. Those who want to be a mentor but cannot give up all their time can still volunteer; they may become a “lead mentor” and are expected to coordinate other mentors to ensure each student team have someone to work with each day.

Our mentors become very competitive and dedicated to their teams, with our winners from the last 2 years still taking every advantage to remind colleagues that their teams won.

Mentors will be invited to a briefing the week before the work experience starts so that they can understand more about their role, the activity the students will be delivering and ask any questions.

If you would like to be a mentor then please complete this form: https://forms.gle/PyLfwSjxMA1tkxos5

Judges

Judges are needed for up to 3 hours on the Thursday afternoon. Judges will be asked to listen to and question student teams as the “tender” for work. Judges will then be asked to provide scoring and feedback, to the organisers the same day so that the winning team can be identified.

There will be judges briefings held to provide more information and give people the opportunity to ask questions.

If you would like to be a judge then please complete this form: https://forms.gle/tZ7SvNXBMHhRCwsv7
